Black henna leaves 7-year-old with horrific burns – Khaleej Times

Posted in Tattoo Nightmares on Aug 21, 2017

Seven-year-old Madison Guliver’s holiday to Egypt ended up being a nightmare after her black henna tattoo gave her blisters.

While holidaying, she went ahead and applied the black henna design on her forearm at the hotel’s salon. Shortly after, she started complaining about her itchy forearm.

Within no time, the design erupted into a series of painful blisters. After she was rushed to the hospital, the blisters had to be cut off by medics at a specialist burns unit, according to a report in Metro. The incident has left her hand with permanent scarring.

The doctors initially gave her steroid cream but when blisters started to form on Madison’s fingers, she was finally referred to burns’ specialist.

Her father, Martin Gulliver said: “We started to panic. They had never seen it before, and each time we went in they were trying different things but it was getting worse and worse.”

The young girl now has to wear a pressure bandage for at least six months to minimise the scarring, the Metro report said.

Black henna tattoos can contain high levels of the toxic chemical paraphenylenediamine (PPD), which can cause hypersensitivity reactions to some people. Caution is practiced in Dubai and the Municipality has warned salons from using black henna to avoid facing a Dh2,000 fine.
