Why a dream Championship title win could turn into a nightmare for this lifelong Cardiff City supporter – WalesOnline

Posted in Tattoo Nightmares on Aug 30, 2017

Top of the table, five league wins from five and a record-breaking start.

Life’s pretty good for Cardiff City fans right now.

The confidence is higher than it’s been for some time, and the Bluebirds can enjoy a wry smile every time they look at the Championship standings over the course of the international break.

And lifelong fan Paul Gronow is among those who are loving the ride under Neil Warnock.

The 34-year-old – like every over member of the Cardiff faithful – while not getting too carried away at this early stage, is enjoying dreaming of promotion into the promised land of the Premier League after the club’s flawless start to the 2017-18 campaign.

And after seeing his side claim a maximum of 15 points from their opening five fixtures, Paul vowed to get his first ever tattoo – if he’s given the go ahead from his wife Jessica – if the Bluebirds go on to win the title.

He set up a poll on Twitter to ask fans to vote for what he should get inked on his skin in the event that the Bluebirds do lift the Championship trophy in May… but there’s been a catch.

The options for what he is willing to have permanently etched on his body include a Cardiff City crest, the Wales FA crest, an image of Warnock’s face or a crest of local rivals Swansea City.

But his poll – which is active until September 4 – has seemingly been hijacked by supporters who have voted for him to get a tattoo of the Swans if the Bluebirds do taste glory in England’s second tier come the end of the season.

“It started off as a bit of a joke because if I’m honest, while it’s been a great start, I don’t really see it continuing right the way through the season,” said Paul.

“I’ve got to admit, I thought everyone would vote for the tattoo of Neil Warnock’s face, or maybe even the Wales badge.

“But it seems even the Bluebirds have turned on me just for a bit of a laugh!

“I’ll happily take it if we win the league though. I haven’t decided where on my body I’d get it done yet either. But if we won the title it would be well worth it I suppose.

“I still need to get permission from my wife so we’ll see what happens.”

Almost half (46%) of the votes so far are for Paul to get the Swansea crest tattooed on to his body if the Bluebirds win the league, while 37% of those to have had their say in his poll want him to get an image of Cardiff’s veteran boss Warnock inked on to his skin.

And while he admits he’d be happy to honour his vow, he believes the response proves just how much Warnock has galvanised the club since his arrival in October.

“I think it all shows just how happy things are at the moment and everyone’s enjoying it,” added Paul.

“It’s still early days and there’s a long way to go. My heart says we will definitely finish in the top six but my head still says it’ll be top 10.

“While he’s only scored one goal, Kenneth Zohore has been immense and Nathaniel Mendez-Laing has just been incredible.

“We’ve got a tough run coming up, and I’d take a draw in the next game against Fulham. It’ll be very interesting to see how it all ends up anyway.”
