‘Below Deck’: Rhylee Gerber Shares the Backstory Behind Some of Her Tattoos – Showbiz Cheat Sheet08.22.20

Rhylee Gerber from Below Deck recently provided a little backstory behind some of her tattoos. She has a vivid, colorful design on her thigh and also a dream catcher inked into the back of her arm.

She opened up on an Instagram story Q&A about her ink and also offered some insight into what it was like to be on the show. Fans asked her for opinions on the current season of Below Deck Mediterranean, but Gerber preferred to refrain from weighing in.

Gerber shared that she personally knows Captain Sandy Yawn but has never worked for her. Ive only known [Yawn] to be supportive, uplifting and thoughtful, Gerber shared. Having never worked under her I cannot speak for her management style.

A fan wondered if the tattoo on Gerbers thigh hurt when she had it done. Brutal, she shared. In fact I had to take half a Xanax just to sit through the second session so that I didnt move.

She shared that taking any kind of medication should not be done lightly. After which I was in no shape to drive or operate heavy machinery, she continued. Drug use (prescription or not) can have a great impact on you and your potential surroundings. Side effects and legal ramifications can be far worse than the emotions we saw/felt with the latest episode [of] Below Deck Med.

The dream catcher tattoo had a sweet story behind it. Long story short, she wrote. I visit the St. George, Utah area often on my travels. Theres spectacular hot springs there that the city wanted to fill in with concrete. I won a $100 tattoo raffle at a local bar one night and the friend that introduced me to the springs designed this logo for the petitioners to help protest and save the hot springs.

Gerber has shared her hikes and travels through the breathtaking Alaskan frontier. Shes also still creating unique jewelry designs, Untamed by Rhylee, and plans to take more orders soon. Soon Ill be taking more orders, she shared in her story. COVID has thrown a wrench in a few details and Im working diligently to sort them out so my last presales get to their owners ASAP.

She shared how she got into designing a jewelry line created from natural elements. I was with a girlfriend of mine and we spotted a porcupine by the road, she told Showbiz Cheat Sheet in January. And Id always heard that you can get close to the porcupine just by tossing like a little hat at them or some little small piece of clothing or something that the clothes would stick to. It was so funny because there were a bunch of tourists on the road and they pulled over watching us basically chase after this porcupine. Long story short, I got some quills out of it.

The porcupine lived! she laughed. Gerber thoroughly cleaned the quills but carried them around for what seemed to be an eternity. And then, of course, fishing, I was I collecting these little earbones. Theyre really cool and they look like little ivory feathers.

With PIVOT, FLC mounts major show of Native American painting – The Durango Herald08.22.20

PIVOT: Skateboard Deck Art will change the way you think about contemporary painting.

The new exhibition at Center of Southwest Studies at Fort Lewis College is finally open to the public. Originally scheduled for last March, the show can now be seen in person or virtually through a scheme designed by its curatorial team. Rarely has an exhibit of contemporary painting this rich, textured and tantalizing been mounted here in Durango.

Last week, PIVOT opened its doors to the centers membership, and now the public can view 114 works by 28 artists from 13 different cultures and communities. Access is by appointment only, with visitation groups capped at eight people per 45-minute time slots. Throughout the fall, the gallery will be open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday. Some Saturdays will also have open hours. Visitors will be required to wear masks and maintain social distancing. The centers YouTube channel and social media accounts on Facebook and Instagram will carry a virtual tour and interviews.

Dont be confused by the title: Skateboard decks have been surfaces for two-dimensional art for some time. Popular with young people, skateboards have morphed into a self-standing genre particularly in Native American art.

And why not? A round-cornered rectangle of wood or fiberglass is as valid a surface for artistic expression as canvas, paper or a mural wall. When you see more than 100 skateboard decks mounted like so many oil paintings in a beautiful installation, its easy to see PIVOT as a welcome addition to the canon.

Art materials, not to mention subject matter or even purpose, have changed over the millennia. From charcoal smudges on cave walls to water-based paint in Roman frescoes, media and meanings have shifted over time. By the Renaissance, egg-tempera altar panels started to morph into easel paintings of landscapes, portraiture and still life. The 19th century saw an explosion of massive history paintings on canvas. All this is backstory for the humble skateboard as a surface on which to express oneself and ones sense of place in the world.

According to guest curators Duane Koyawena (Hopi/Tewa) and Landis Bhe (Din), PIVOT refers to a basic move in the sport of skateboarding and also a shift in Native American art.

As artists, weve developed motifs melding traditional themes with contemporary experiences, Koyawena said in an interview last spring. We choose our tools, brush or knife, paint or ink, then we create through a maze of days and between cultures.

PIVOT demonstrates that premise with its range of styles, techniques, subject matter and media. The only constant is the skateboard itself.

Some artists embrace traditional stories through symbols and stylized designs. Others use realistic techniques or stretch into the fantasy worlds of surrealism. Youll encounter painterly abstraction and startling optical designs. A few boards reflect a sophisticated interest in Modernism while others may appear nave. Find your own favorites.

Not to be missed are three boards by the legendary Douglas Miles Sr., who founded Apache Skateboards, the nexus of a significant community-building project on the San Carlos Apache Nation. From the beginning, Miles skateboards explored Apache history and lie at the core of a whole movement and a new genre.

The meaning behind Bachelor Locky Gilbert’s tattoos – Now To Love08.20.20

To the naked eye, Locky Gilbert is tall, dark, handsome... and very tatted up.

Yep, it doesn't take a genius to notice that the 2020 Bachelor is a fan of his tattoos, but the 30-year-old hunk confessed that there was one design in particular that he'd never consider.

In a game of Would You Rather with WHO, our Bachelor Locky was asked if he'd rather bungee jump multiple times in a row or get his partner's name tattooed on him.

So whilst it would be a hard no to getting his partner's name permanently attached to his skin, Locky has had numerous tattoos inked onto his remarkably chiselled body.

If you're as curious as we are, we've put together a handy guide to all of Locky's unique designs - at least, the ones that he's willing to show on camera!

There's also an outline of a world map across his rib - most likely a nod to his love of travel and exploration.

However, he's also a proud Aussie and has a map of his home country on his back left shoulder, along with a Southern Cross tattoo.

If you look closely at his biceps (which we'll admit we've done on numerous occasions), he also has a royal flush row of cards inked on one whilst the opposite features a cursive design that reads "You Only Live Once."

Whilst chatting to Dave Hughes and Ed Kavalee on their radio show, the 30-year-old said that the small print is a Muhammad Ali quote: "He who is not courageous enough to take risks will accomplish nothing in life."

It certainly reflects his love of adventure - and there's no bigger risk than putting your heart on the line on national television.

It's not just his neck, torso and arms that have tattoos etched onto them.

In fact, Locky's tattoos even go down to his leg and he has an intricate design on his lower leg that goes from his knee down his calf muscle.

However, fans of the show are less than impressed with his ink work and have dragged the Bachelor through the mud on social media.

"I can't afford to be picky, but if he chose me I'd make him laser off some of those tattoos and change his name from Locklan to Lachlan." one person penned on Twitter.

"A group date where Locky removes all of his s* tattoos please," wrote another.

Let's hope one lucky lady sees past the questionable designs.

LA’s Top Tattoo Artist Reveals the Ink Everyone Is Getting Since Parlors Reopened – POPSUGAR08.19.20

Maybe you're among the group of people itching to get back to "normal" for the Zoom calls where everyone wears nothing but underwear from the waist down to end; for the copious time spent between you and banana bread to be a thing of the past. While that's not likely to happen any time in the immediate future (and for good reason), the day-to-day tedium is likely behind the spike in tattoo appointments as many parlors across the country have started reopening at some capacity.

Nobody know this better than Brian "Dr. Woo," a celebrity tattoo artist who's inked everyone from Hailey Bieber to Zoe Kravitz. "At first my clients were pretty quiet about coming in everyone was quarantining and being mindful about where they were going," he told POPSUGAR. "Now judging by the influx of requests of people asking if they can get a tattoo, everyone is definitely ready to get back to their daily routine and the activities that bring them joy. For some people, that means getting a new piece of artwork."

While he hasn't fully opened up his studio in Los Angeles, California, he has been doing tattoos for clients privately here and there and there are a few common denominators in the asks he's getting. "I don't think the designs correlate with our given situation," said Dr. Woo, adding: "The fact that people want to get a tattoo and break up the monotony of quarantine life is more of the emphasis here."

Still, if you're looking for inspiration, we've got it all here. From every kind of animal both wild and domestic to star-fueled designs, keep reading (yes, in your underwear, should you so choose) as Dr. Woo breaks down the three of the most popular tattoos people are getting right now.

Tattoo model shows off new piercings after covering 98% of her body with ink – Daily Star08.19.20

Amber Luke is famous for her jaw-dropping body modifications.

The Australian model is covered from head to toe in ink but shes not finished altering her appearance yet.

On Instagram, she garnered 1,600 likes by showing off her new piercings.

She has two studs in her lips, along with one above her pout, and seems chuffed with the results.

Alongside a picture of her mouth, Amber listed everything shes changed about her look over the years.

She wrote: I have a total of 98% of my body tattooed, 17 piercings and three body modifications.

Ambers new piercings join the others she has on her body, including dermals underneath her eyes.

These studs sit on the surface of the skin.

To create this seamless look, they are implanted under a layer of flesh.

This tends to make the procedure more painful and increases the risk of jewellery being rejected by the body.

These risks havent put Amber off as she even has a dermal piercing on her crotch.

Ambers other body modifications include her ears, which she stretched to 3.2cm after getting her lobes punctured.

She also got her tongue split into a fork.

This excruciating op is extremely dangerous and can lead to bleeding and infection, but thankfully there were no complications.

The same cant be said for the 25-year-olds eyeball inkings though.

A risky procedure gave Amber the bright blue eyes she was hoping for, but the surgery left her blind for three weeks.

Ambers dramatic body modification is far from complete.

As she has close to 600 tattoos, shes come up with a new way to make room on her ink-covered skin.

The influencer has been getting blackout tattoos.

These involve covering over the skin in black ink, which you can then etch into with white designs.

On Instagram last month, Amber wrote: I have future plans to work with white over the blackout when its all healed.

Amber also plans o go under the knife in the coming weeks.

She is getting a second breast augmentation as she wasnt happy with the first boob job she got in the past.

The Brisbane-based star is getting a 550CC implant, which is likely to make her size around a D-cup.

Star Wars: 10 Jedi And Sith Pieces Of Concept Art That Are Incredible – Screen Rant08.17.20

Star Wars designs have varied throughout the years before landing on their final form, including this Sith and Jedi art!

One of the endless of joys ofStar Warsis that there is always something new. And with every road taken in the movies, television shows, and animated series, there are as many or more unexplored. The world of concept art provides fans as much fascination in a galaxy far, far away as the films themselves.

RELATED:Star Wars: 10 Huge Things You Only Know If Youve Read The Comics And Novels

As the prequel era of Star Wars kicked off, so did many concepts of Jedi and Sith that never made it to the screen. Some did, in different forms and mediums (and action figures!). All of them tease the imagination with what might have been. Here are ten incredible pieces of Jedi and Sith concept art.

George Lucas created a new Sith villain for each of the prequel movies, and General Grievous started out as one of these concepts. He eventually morphed into the robotic leader of the droid armies, but before that, he featured in some of the most visually striking pieces of Star Wars concept art ever. An early concept shows how dramatically different Grievous was to anything seen before in the movies, with multiple spider-like arms and a floating body that would have been more at home in the world of The Matrix.

The look of Obi-Wan Kenobi from the original Star Wars film was iconic, so it's interesting to look at the myriad design concepts for him from The Phantom Menace. George Lucas envisioned the Jedi as visually very different from what had been seen before, and that's evident in this piece of concept art. Obi-Wan has a high and dramatic ponytail, along with a tattoo on his forehead. He also looks a lot like Ralph Fiennes, who may have been someone Lucas considered casting in the role.

Before the script for The Force Awakens really got nailed down, the role of the villain was a nebulous Jedi Hunter. This character eventually became Kylo Ren, but before that, he went through numerous different design iterations. One of them was this pale-faced and spooky Sith-like character with an exaggerated Darth Vader style helmet. The design went unused in the movie but inspired Dave Fioloni to create a character in the Star Wars: Rebels animated series named The Fifth Brother.

Another Dave Filoni inspiration resulted in one of the most important Star Wars characters of all time. Ahsoka Tano grew out of a need for an audience surrogate in the landmarkClone Wars animated series, and from the start, Filoni had settled on the idea she would be a Torgruta, like Shaak Ti from the prequels.

RELATED:10 Storylines That Were Still Not Resolved In Clone Wars Season 7

Early on, Ahsoka was called Ashla and was much younger than she eventually appeared on the show. Her core elements manifested from the start, though, evidenced in this piece of concept art from very early in the process of developing the series.

The simple brief George Lucas gave concept designers for the new Sith lord in The Phantom Menace was simple: create your worst nightmare. Artist Ian McCaig did just that, creating this monstrous creature that shares a little DNA with Pennywise from It. Lucas found the design too scary, prompting the design team to go back to the drawing board. Elements of this design eventually found their way into successive characters, like Assaj Ventress and Mother Talzin, both of whom appeared in the Clone Wars.

Ki-Adi Mundi is one of the most visible members of the Jedi Council in the Star Wars prequels. He gets speaking lines in every film and a death scene during Order 66. His conical head design is pretty cool and was a big feature from the concept art that inspired him. For Revenge of the Sith, the Jedi nearly got a huge makeover. Lucas wanted to show the Jedi a little roughed up from the ongoing Clone Wars, so designers imagined Mundi with an eyepatch and more militaristic look than he had before.

Asajj Ventress had quite the evolutionary process before she made it to the screen in the 2-D Clone Wars micro-series by Genndy Tartakovsky. Her earliest concepts originated in The Phantom Menace, but that idea was really expanded upon for Attack of the Clones. For a long time, the new Sith villain in the film leaned toward her, and various artists imagined Ventress as a pale, dark figure like this piece here. Though Count Dooku became the villain in the film, this concept art inspired her animated appearance.

Another Jedi that almost got a radical new look for Revenge of the Sith was Plo Koon. One of the most inventive designs of the prequels (and Dave Filoni's personal favorite), Plo Koon joined Ki-Adi Mundi in the geared-for-war department. His biggest upgrade comes in the form of a cool two-bladed lightsaber.

RELATED:Star Wars: 10 Reasons Luke, Leia, And Han Were The Perfect Trio

The Jedi kept their traditional and simple attire for the movie, but this design was so awesome Hasbro made an action figure of it a little over ten years ago.Elements of this design seem to reflect in the Jedi costumes of the upcoming High Republic era, though no one has that cool lightsaber.

Darth Maul went from one-and-done villain to one of the most critical characters in all of Star Wars. His design process went through an equally strange path, with detours into the aforementioned scary clown department. This design, by Ian McCaig, started to lock in on the eventual iconic look for the character. The face patterns actually originated with another random character, and the horns weren't horns at first; McCaig imagined them like feathers, fixed to Darth Maul's head via a wire. Ouch.

The look of the villain started off uncertain in The Force Awakens, and so did the look of its noblest hero. Luke Skywalker appears grizzled and haggard in this early piece of concept art from the movie. His status in the story, like so much else, was unclear, so concept designers had free reign to imagine him how they wanted. While Luke would eventually appear a little gruff on the island of Ach-To, he wouldn't be this battered from the terrible experience of losing his Jedi Temple to Ben Solo.

The meaning behind Adam Lambert’s tattoos – Nicki Swift08.16.20

Adam Lambert didn't get his first tattoo until the age of 27 (pictured above), but despite being a bit of a late-bloomer, it was for a pretty good reason. As the performer recounted in a 2015 interview withiHeartRadio, Lambert picked an Egyptian eye design specifically, the Eye of Horus to be tatted on his wrist as a form of protection for a journey that he would embark on shortly thereafter: his debut on the eighth season of American Idol. As Lambert explained, the eye was an abstract reminder of sorts, one that would serve to protect the singer in front of the eye of the camera during filming.

"I make up a reason for things, and I was like, 'yeah, I need an eye of protection because I'm going to be seen on camera and this will protect me,'" Lambert dished. And likethat first tattoo, Lambert has continued to choose tattoo designs that are imbued with meaning. His ink is significant and deeply personal.

Though the list of Lambert's tattoos has grown quite long, among them include tats inspired by Greek gods, an infinity symbol, a skeleton key, and a mosaic, among others. But one particular piece brings his journey as a musician and LGBTQ+ icon full circle.

Virgil Abloh Is Back in the Hot Seat for Allegedly Copying This Belgian Designers Work – Yahoo Lifestyle08.16.20

Virgil Abloh is facing accusations of plagiarism once again.

The Off-White founder and Louis Vuitton Mens creative director has issued a response after renowned Belgian designer Walter Van Beirendonck accused him of copying his designs in Louis Vuittons recent collection.

More from Footwear News

In an official statement, which was obtained by multiple media outlets, Abloh called Van Beirendoncks claims completely false and a hate-filled attempt to discredit his work.

The inspiration for my collection comes from the DNA of Louis Vuitton, including the 2005 Louis Vuitton menswear show, and it was clearly outlined in the notes distributed to the press when the show began, read the statement. This is yet another instance of false equivalence to try to discredit me as a designer.

Rapper and designer Kanye West who maintains a close friendship with Abloh and served as his former creative partner also came to the designers defense. On Tuesday night, he wrote on Twitter, Virgil can do whatever he wants. Do you know how hard its been for us to be recognized?

According to Van Beirendonck, who also heads the fashion department at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp, Ablohs spring 21 line which presented live in Shanghai last Thursday imitated multiple aspects of his own lines, including one mens suit in particular that featured a figure sewed to the front of the coat. In the Instagram post, in which he tagged fashion industry watchdog Diet Prada, Van Beirendoncks design was seen in red, while Ablohs was in blue.

A series of images shared on Instagram also showed other Van Beirendonck designs juxtaposed with those of Abloh. In another photo, he posted an image with the words I hate fashion copycats in appliqu on the center of a shirt. Please get your own concept, he captioned the post.

Story continues

In an interview last Friday with Belgian publication Knack Weekend, Van Beirendonck said, Its very clear that Virgil Abloh is not a designer. He has no language of his own, no vision. He cant create something of his own season after season, and that is painful.

Last March, Abloh found himself embroiled in controversy after Diet Prada claimed he might have plagiarized creations from two promising streetwear designers. The account took to Instagram to share a yellow-graffitied suit and a green graphic on a black sweater from Off-Whites fall 19 mens show that bore resemblance to styles by independent brands Colrs and Gramm, respectively.

In 2018, Abloh became one of the first Black men to helm a global luxury brand following his appointment as artistic director of Louis Vuitton Mens. Beyond Off-White, he also owns the brand Pyrex Vision and serves as creative director of Wests company Donda.

FN has reached out to both Ablohs and Van Beirendoncks teams for comment.
